Since 2010 the Poverty Alliance, Scotland’s anti-poverty network, has been organising an annual Assembly for Tackling Poverty. This Assembly has become a key forum for debating the issues associated with tackling poverty in Scotland. The Assembly brings people with direct experience of the issues of poverty together with representatives of all parts of civil society – community groups, voluntary organisations, trade unions, faith based organisations – and policy makers and politicans. By bringing together a diverse group for two days of debate and dialogue, the Assembly aims to build consensus about the causes of poverty and the priorities for tackling it. At the heart of this dialogue is the real, lived experience of poverty in Scotland.
This year’s Assembly will focus on the challenges of achieving social justice in Scotland. Whether it is rising food and fuel costs, shifting public attitudes to poverty, or dealing with the consequences of welfare changes, we face considerable challenges. At the same time we have the prospect of the independence referendum in 2014. This year’s Assembly will provide opportunities for debate about all of these issues, as well as an opportunity to reflect on what we have learned over the last 4 years of the EPIC project and how we apply those lessons in the future.
As always the Scottish Assembly for Tackling Poverty is FREE to attend. If you are based in Scotland and are living on a low income, or are from a grassroots organisation with low or no funding, we will be able to help you with travel and caring costs. We can also help with accommodation costs if necessary. Please note that places are limited for the Assembly. We will seek to achieve a balance between participants from the grassroots, civil society groups, statutory bodies, and political groups. We may also limit the number of participants from any one group. We will also prioritise those who can attend for both days of the Assembly.
BOOKING FOR THE ASSEMBLY IS NOW CLOSED. HOWEVER, IF YOU STILL WISH TO ATTEND PLEASE CALL THE POVERTY ALLIANCE ON 0141 353 0440 TO BE PLACED ON THE WAITING LIST
